SHOW INFO
PLOT SUMMARY
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a dazzling, family-friendly musical that retells the biblical story of Joseph, his coat of many colors, and his journey from favored son to slave to powerful leader in Egypt. With its energetic music, diverse musical styles, and larger-than-life characters, this show offers ensemble and featured roles for performers of all ages and backgrounds.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
Actors of all ages, genders, sizes, and ethnicities are needed. Age ranges listed are approximate and indicate the age to be played and not necessarily the age of the actor.
JOSEPH | 18-25 | Tenor A3-A5
The show’s title character: a dreamer, an optimist, and the favorite son of Jacob. Charismatic and sincere, Joseph is blessed with the gift of interpreting dreams. He’s youthful and hopeful even as adversity mounts, showing growth from innocent youth to wise, forgiving leader. Performance qualities: strong singing voice, emotional range, sincere presence, and the ability to anchor the stage with vulnerability and hope.
THE NARRATOR | 20-45 | Mezzo-Soprano/Soprano F3-G5
The show’s storyteller guides the audience through Joseph’s journey with warmth, wit, and energy. This role is vocally demanding, requiring a performer with a powerful voice, excellent diction, and the charisma to engage the audience throughout. The Narrator interacts with nearly every character and sets the emotional tone, often bridging scenes with clever commentary or heartfelt encouragement.
JACOB | 30-60 | Baritone A3-F5
Joseph’s father and patriarch of the family, Jacob, is loving but flawed in his favoritism towards Joseph. He’s a figure of authority and affection but also becomes grief-stricken by Joseph’s supposed loss. Ideal for a performer who can balance comedic and dramatic moments, showing both paternal pride and vulnerability.
JOSEPH’S BROTHERS | 18-35
(Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Naphtali, Issachar, Asher, Dan, Zebulun, Gad, Benjamin, Judah) Vocal Ranges: Tenor/Baritone/Bass (varied)
The eleven brothers are a central ensemble, each with a distinct personality. They range from mischievous and jealous to remorseful and loving, providing both comic and heartfelt moments. Several brothers have featured singing solos:
- Reuben | Tenor C4-Eb5
The eldest; leads “Those Canaan Days”; often portrayed as earnest but overwhelmed. - Simeon | Tenor D4-F5
Sings “One More Angel in Heaven”; has a flair for the dramatic, especially in country-western style. - Judah | Tenor F4-F5
Sings “Benjamin Calypso”; lively, fun-loving, and energetic. - Benjamin: The youngest of the brothers, innocent and beloved.
The remaining brothers contribute to the rich ensemble sound and movement. All should be strong singers, humorous, and physically expressive.
Note: Auditionees for brothers will also be considered for featured dance and comedic bits.
PHARAOH | 25-45 | Baritone/Tenor B3-Ab5
The ruler of Egypt, Pharaoh, is a scene-stealing, Elvis-inspired character. Brash, cool, and comically egotistical, Pharaoh brings rock-and-roll flair to the show. Requires strong comedic timing, big stage presence, and an ability to channel “The King.”
POTIPHAR | 30-60 | Baritone D4-B4
A wealthy and powerful Egyptian, Potiphar is shrewd and self-important. His wife’s betrayal provides one of the story’s pivotal moments. This role is perfect for an actor with strong character instincts and comedic delivery.
MRS. POTIPHAR | 25-35 | Mezzo-Soprano
Potiphar’s wife is glamorous, cunning, and flirtatious—a comedic femme fatale. She tries to seduce Joseph, leading to his wrongful imprisonment. This is a great opportunity for a performer who can balance humor, allure, and character acting.
BAKER AND BUTLER | Tenor/Baritone
These two prisoners meet Joseph in jail and have their dreams interpreted by him. Both have solo singing lines and comedic potential. The Baker is more pessimistic and nervous, while the Butler is hopeful and energetic.
CHILDREN’S CHORUS | 10-13
The show includes a children’s chorus, which participates in several numbers and serves as the heart of the ensemble. Looking for young performers who can sing, move, and bring joy and wonder to the production.
ADULT ENSEMBLE
The ensemble plays the wives of Joseph’s brothers, Egyptians, Canaanites, servants, prisoners, and dancers. Strong singers and movers of all backgrounds, genders, and abilities are encouraged. There is ample opportunity for featured moments, dancing, and character work. Ability to sing harmonies is a plus.
